Internet Censorship Tightens on Anniversary of Zhao Ziyang’s Death
Nine years after former Chinese premier
Zhao Ziyang’s death, many people still visit
his former residence to pay their condolences.
While many others also pay tribute online,
the regime is further tightening its censorship.
This year also marks 25 years after the June 4 Massacre.
Many Chinese people express their concern about the
regime’s attitude towards the suppression of the student
movement in Tiananmen Square, and of Falun Gong.
According to a report by Hong Kong based
Apple Daily, Zhao Ziyang’s former residence
in Beijing was busy with visitors on January 17.
They came to pay their condolences
to the former Chinese premier.
Wang Zhihua, Zhao Ziyang’s son-in-law, said
the atmosphere was better than in previous years.
Former CCP General Secretary Zhao Ziyang
was under house arrest for more than 15 years,
until he passed away on January 17, 2005.
He was arrested after publically opposing the
military crackdown on the student protests in 1989.
His widow, Liang Boqi, also just died in Beijing on
December 25, but no official announcement was made.
On the ninth anniversary of Zhao Ziyang’s death,
photos of he and his wife were place in his study.
Many people sent flowers to the house.
The walls were covered with lamenting poetry from
acquaintances, such as Zhao’s former secretary
Bao Tong, and Hong Kong intellectual Dong Qiao.
Visitors included ‘Tiananmen Mothers’ organizer Ding Zilin,
It also included the consciencious medic Jiang Yanyong,
who petitioned the Chinese regime to vindicate the victims.
Former Central Rural Policy Research Fellow
Yao Jianfu, and former Office of the Secretary
of the Central Committee Wu Jiaxiang attended.
Zhao’s assistant political secretary Wu Wei,
and writer Bing Xin’s daughter Wu Qing visited.
Wu Wei, Zhao’s political assistant secretary: “I went there
to make a salute, and signed my name in the visitor’s book.
I expressed my sympathy to the families, and
nothing else. That is normal, and typical every year.”
However, people wishing to conduct such a normal
and typical activity of condolence have been subject
to harassment and suppression from the authorities.
Many who would like to pay their condolence were
put under house arrest, or even beaten and arrested.
Activist Hu Jia was intercepted by the police
and put under house arrest on Friday, on his
way to offer condolences to Zhao Ziyang.
He told Radio Free Asia that
house arrest has become the norm.
It will only stop when there is true democracy,
rule of law, and human rights in China.
This type of lawless suppression
continues to exist throughout China.
In addition, political commentator He Jiawei was warned by
local police not to become involved in any commemorations.
He Jiawei had previously been interrogated by the
regime for participating in the commemoration hunger
strike of the 25 anniversary of the June 4 Massacre.
He Jiawei: “I think this is a
routine measure of the regime.
The shaky environment frightens the regime.
I believe this dictatorship system is at its end.”
He Jiawei also points out that the so-called “vindication”
simply serves the Communist Party as its political means.
It is like saying someone broke your leg or killed you,
and years later, it simply said to your family, “sorry,
I hit the wrong person, and killed the wrong person.”
He Jiawei believes the vindication is
extremely cunning and shameless.
He Jiawei: “Especially on the June 4 incident and
the persecution of Falun Gong, vindication is not right.
It is a criminal act that needs to be punished.
The student movement and Falun Gong
are two key issues in China to be resolved.
Once these two key points are resolved,
both Xi and Li will have an eased leadership.
They need to abandon the old route of
the CCP, and completely negate the CCP.”
The Epoch Times reported that although some people
were able to pay condolences at Zhao Ziyang’s former
residence, online memorial posts were quickly deleted.
This even included simple phrases such as:
“The ageless Ziyang!” and “Today is the 9th anniversary
of Mr. Zhao’s death. Light a candle for condolence!”
Yu Ying, Vice-Chairman of National Real Estate
Manager Alliance angrily wrote: “Delete it! History
has repeatedly told people: What you delete
will certain be what we pursue tomorrow.”
