Wenling Hospital Doctor Dies After Patient Attack: Doctor Protests Intensify
There have reportedly been repeated incidents in Mainland
China, where hospital patients have attacked doctors.
Recently, a patient in Wenling No.1 People’s
Hospital in Zhejiang, stabbed three doctors.
One doctor died, and two were injured.
On October 28, more than hundreds of doctors in
Wenling hospital held banners, protesting the violence.
The body of the doctor Wang Yujie was sent
to a crematorium on the morning of October 28.
At 8.30am, approximately 200-300
doctors stood outside the hospital.
They held banners saying, “Tribute to Dr. Wang Yunjie,
Reject Violence, Protect Doctors, Maintain the Justice.”
Sources said that the local regime has
applied for the “Peaceful Wenling” award.
Thus, the officials are worried that
this incident will affect the award.
On the middle of the night on October 27, the local regime
sent special police to the hospital to remove Wang’s body.
Hundreds of doctors from the hospital acted to protect the
body. On the internet, people condemned the regime’s action.
Protests continued into the afternoon. Many special police
arrived at the site, and both sides entered a tense stand-off.
Our NTD television reporter contacted Wenling hospital.
Wenling Hospital Doctor: “Now, what we can do
is to defend our rights, our safety and our dignity.
We don’t want to talk any more, we are too upset.”
Wenling Hospital Switchboard: “If you want to know,
you’d better come here, we don’t want to talk more.
There are no media that are speaking out
for us, and there is nobody we can trust.”
In recent years, there have been frequent
reports of patients hurting doctors.
According to statistics, 11 such
incidents happened last year.
The total number of doctors who
were injured or lost their life is 35.
During October, several incidents have taken place.
On September 23, three nurses at Hunan Academy
of Chinese Medicine Affiliated Hospital were stabbed.
On October 20, a patient stabbed a doctor in
Fentian Hospital of Shenyang Medical College.
The patient then jumped out a window and died.
On October 22, a patient died in the 2nd Affiliated
Hospital of Guangdong Medical College.
The patient’s family requested to take
the body home but they were rejected.
The family subsequently injured three doctors.
What is the reason behind these repeated
conflicts between doctors and patients?
Zhuo Xiaoqin, Professor, Tongji Medical University:
“There have been many medical malpractice cases.
It is very difficult for victims to maintain
their rights, as they face many obstacles.
It is very difficult to deal with.
If a patient escalates an incident, they will get a
large compensation, otherwise, they get very little.
If the victim didn’t complain,
they won’t get any compensation.”
Zhuo Xiaoqin comments that in order to get
a problem solved, people have to speak out.
In order to avoid violence, there is an official notice.
It requests hospitals to assign one security guard to
every 20 beds in the hospital, to increase the security.
Tian Wei, former doctor, 2nd Clinic at Guangzhou Military
Region: “The system causes conflict between doctors
and patients. Increasing security cannot solve the problem.
We all know, the Chinese Communist Party
encourages civilians to entirely pursue money.
Many doctors don’t have ethics, and tell the patients
to sell their houses and livestock to pay them.”
Tan Wei says that there is a popular saying among doctors.
“To pursue money, one has to abandon conscience;
to uphold the conscience, one won’t have any money.”
Tan Wei: “I served in a hospital in Hunan in the past.
Once, there was a female patient infected with a virus.
The disease can be cured at a cost of about 2,000 yuan.
In the end, that girl spent over 30,000
yuan, but the disease was not cured.
A doctor told her to sell her jewelry
or try borrowing some money.”
Tan points out trust has been completely
lost between doctors and patients.
Many medical students would rather
change their jobs than being a doctor.
Media report that conflicts between doctors
and patients is only the tip of the iceberg.
On October 27, Mainland Chinese media reported
that many Chinese medical students changed their
jobs, so the countryside has a shortage of doctors.
This crisis is deeply worsening.
Some medical students aimed their jobs at research
institutions after entering their medical school.
Some students abandoned medical jobs,
doing other jobs as soon as they graduated.
